A phone thief suspect was nicked by plain clothes cops who swooped on him in a posh hosiery shop.

A gang of men tried to pinch mobiles from shoppers in Oxford Street in the capital.

Two uniformed officers on motorbikes and others in civvies collared a man – who had been on a bike – in the branch of Calzedonia.

Customers buying fancy tights and leggings watched on in shock as one cop pinned him to the floor.

It happened at the bottom of the stairs leading to the fitting rooms.

The officers then led him upstairs cuffed and he was searched in the street.

The cops were hailed for their speed at making the arrest, as reported on Need To Know.

It happened near the junction of Vere Street on the famous shopping road in the heart of central London.

The police swooped at about 8pm last Friday (28 Mar).

Max Bytefield said: “That’s certainly a determined effort by the police.”

Eric Hicks added: “Good work coppers.”

Jordan Fox said: “I’ve seen a chase tonight next to John Lewis on Oxford Street.”

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Police were called around 8pm on Friday, 28 March to Oxford Street following reports of a robbery.

“It was reported that a group of men attempted to steal mobile phones from members of the public.

“Officers pursued a man before arresting him on suspicion of theft.

“His bike was also seized and he was reported for road traffic offences.

“He was later released from custody without further action.”
