A pair of drunk friends had to be rescued after getting stranded in a stolen yacht.

The pair took the boat for a sail around an island and had to be rescued after getting stuck at sea.

Pedro M. began hatching the outlandish plan in the early hours of Sunday (20 Apr) at the airport where he sleeps rough.

The 58-year-old came up with the idea while boozing with another homeless man who had sailing knowledge.

After sharing a whole whisky bottle, the pair left the airport on foot and arrived at a yacht club about 40 minutes later.

They forced their way onto a 12-m-long sailboat and got stuck into the booze they found onboard.

When they were thoroughly sozzled, they set sail from the boat club in Can Pastilla in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

Several hours later, the pair reached the uninhabited island of Cabrera, about 30 nautical miles away.

The theft of the Peregrin Tuk sailboat was noticed later on Sunday morning and reported to the authorities.

But unbeknownst to the owners, Pedro and his 53-year-old accomplice had already called the coast guard themselves.

The plastered pair had got lost and were struggling amid tall waves after setting course for Mallorca’s east coast.

Police officers reached the pair in a patrol boat, arrested them, and towed the stolen vessel back to the yacht club.

The men were released without charge on Tuesday (22 Apr), as reported by Need To Know.

They have since returned to Palma de Mallorca Airport.

A remorseless Pedro called himself “Jack Sparrow” and told local media: “Honestly, the alcohol got the better of us.

“Sailing without seeing a soul, no police turning up, sleeping on a proper mattress, waking up and watching the boat glide through the water.

“Just enjoying it all.”

The furious yacht owners claim the men turned the Peregrin Tuk into a “floating bin” and left it with a collapsed bulkhead.

But Pedro hit back: “We returned the boat in perfect condition. It’s not true that it was wrecked.

“Not a single scratch on it.”
