They attended the scene and decided to fill in the opening for ‘safety reasons’ after assessing the hole.

The coastguard attended visitor hot spot Sandilands beach, near Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire.

The callout took place on Wednesday (16 Jul) around 3pm, as reported by Need To Know.

A spokesperson for the emergency responders stated: “Mablethorpe Coastguard were paged by Humber Coastguard to a report of a six foot hole dug in the sand on Sandilands beach.

“After an initial Assessment, it was decided to fill the hole in for safety reasons, please be aware that this is very dangerous as there is a risk of entrapment should a hole collapse.

“There is also a risk of a walker falling into the hole when it is left and this could cause an injury.”

Members of the public have applauded the coastguards actions.

Ann Elizabeth said: “Hopefully the person who actually dug the hole will see this post and think twice about doing this sort of thing again.”

Sara Bright added: “Thank you for making it safe for everyone.”
