A climber has been left “sad and heartbroken” after discovering mountains of rubbish scattered across one of the world’s tallest mountains.

He has also shared the video online, which has angered viewers.

The mountain guide, who has asked to remain anonymous, led a group up to a military camp on Pakistan’s famous Baltoro Glacier on the Karakoram range.

This location is around 4,500-4,800 metres above ground.

When the hikers arrived, they were horrified by what they saw.

Instead of pristine ice and mountain views, the group found litter everywhere.

This included everything from kerosene cans to food packaging and empty tins dumped across the site.

“I didn’t expect it to be this bad,” the climber told Need To Know.

“I felt so sad, and the tourists were also very upset.

“We all need to work together to clean this and to educate people about the dangers of climate change.”

The Baltoro Glacier lies in a key route to K2 – the world’s second-highest mountain at 8,611m.

The guide led the group up the mountain earlier this summer on 19 July but shared a video of the site online just yesterday (3 Sep).

Viewers have shared their thoughts on the discovery.

“I always feel heartbroken when i see and pick up trash on the beaches, but this is on another level,” said Jesseline.

Annie said: “So sad that people don’t make plans for how to bring everything they brought up on the mountains back again. It’s equally important as making it to the top.”

Another viewer said: “Sorry for this to happening in your beautiful amazing country.”

“One universal human trait: littering,” added someone else.
