An amateur gardener from Stoke-on-Trent has grown the world’s heaviest runner bean.
Derek Hulme was proud to present his 196g (6.9oz) vegetable, which weighs as much as a tube of toothpaste.
The green-fingered grower spent the past year tending to the prize winner at his local allotment.

He entered it into the Canna UK National Giant Vegetable Championships in Malvern, in September.
The runner bean has now been confirmed as the heaviest in the world by Guinness World Records.
The champ also holds the world record for the longest leek.
“This community really is top-notch, and it really is amazing what you can do on a little plot of land in Stoke-on-Trent,” Derek said.
“I have had the bug for growing plants since I was a child, and having a space I can do this is brilliant.
“I am incredibly chuffed with achievements, last year I won the World Record for the world’s longest leek, and this year I won the World Record for the world’s heaviest runner bean.

Derek also thanked fellow giant vegetable grower Peter Glazebrook for sharing the runner bean seeds with him.
Glazebrook currently holds the world record for the longest runner bean – 89.7cm (39in).
Derek added: “Thank you to fellow large veg grower, Peter Glazebrook who shared the runner beans seeds with me.
“Allotments really do unearth the very best in people and the community.”
Stoke-on-Trent City Council has 80 allotment sites, with approximately 3,086 plots.
Councillor Sarah Hill said: “The rich diversity, both in people and nature is really lovely to see.
“I would encourage anyone who has an interest in growing their own, whether that be flowers, or vegetables to explore any allotment opportunities near to where you live.
“It’s a great way to connect with new friends and nature.”
