Next Wednesday, May 29, Greene King, a major UK pub chain, is offering free pints to customers across hundreds of its bars. To snag a free drink, there’s just one fun requirement: a bit of football knowledge.
In celebration of its new False Nine golden ale, 532 Greene King pubs will be participating in this promotion.
The catch is that you need to name a ‘false nine’ player—a center-forward known for dropping deeper into the midfield to create plays.

To claim your free pint, first, locate your nearest Greene King pub using their pint finder. Then, head over on Wednesday and name any player who has taken on the false nine role.
The top five players identified in a Greene King survey are Lionel Messi, Phil Foden, Johan Cruyff, Roberto Firmino, and Francesco Totti.
Keep in mind a few terms and conditions. It’s up to the pub manager to decide if your answer is valid, and each customer can only claim one free pint of the False Nine golden ale.
Greene King explains, “To celebrate the football, we have created the perfect golden ale to enjoy while watching the game. False Nine is a refreshing, lightly hopped golden beer crafted with a blend of fragrant hops.
The beer is named after a tactic in football where a centre-forward repeatedly moves towards the ball in deeper positions from a high starting position, often dropping to receive centrally. This tactic aims to draw players out of position and disrupt the defence.”
A survey conducted by Greene King revealed that many Brits are not well-versed in football terminology, with 18 percent admitting they don’t know any football lingo at all. More than 20 million Brits are unfamiliar with the offside rule, and a quarter have no idea how VAR works.
Will Hemmings, Greene King’s marketing boss, stated, “We’re giving away the pint for free for one day only in selected Greene King pubs, but only to those who can prove their football knowledge by naming a false nine player.”
Former Arsenal and England forward Alan Smith added, “The modern false nine is quite a tricky position to define, so it’s not surprising to hear the nation is a bit confused by what exactly it means.
From Messi to Firmino, there have been some iconic footballers that have played in this role, so it’s great to see a nod to the position with the launch of Greene King’s new False Nine golden ale. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a casual supporter who doesn’t even know what the offside rule is, now’s the time to get behind the nation and cheer them on to glory this summer.
And what better way to do it than at the pub with your friends and family—and a refreshing pint of False Nine in hand?”
