Italian football legend Roberto Baggio has been urgently hospitalized following a brutal attack by armed robbers.
The incident took place as Baggio watched Italy’s narrow 1-0 loss to Spain at Euro 2024 last night. During the match, Baggio and his family fell victim to a violent home invasion.
Corriere del Veneto reported the distressing news today, revealing that the “serious attack” happened at the former Ballon d’Or winner’s villa in Altavilla Vicentina. The 57-year-old football icon endured a “nightmare” ordeal that spanned roughly forty minutes.

Baggio attempted to fend off five armed assailants who allegedly forced their way into his home. Despite his valiant efforts, he and his family were overpowered and confined to a closet. The intruders then looted the house, making off with watches and jewelry. After the robbers fled, Baggio managed to escape and contact the authorities.
Following the harrowing incident, Baggio spent the night in a local hospital, receiving stitches for his injuries. Police are now investigating the attack.
Throughout his illustrious career in Italy, Baggio, affectionately dubbed “the Divine Ponytail,” played for the nation’s top clubs, including Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter Milan. He secured two Serie A titles and was instrumental in Juventus’ 1993 UEFA Cup victory, where he scored two pivotal goals in the final’s first leg against Borussia Dortmund. That same year, Baggio was honored as FIFA World Player of the Year and received the Ballon d’Or.
Baggio made history as the first Italian to score in three different World Cups, achieving this feat in 1998 after scoring in 1990 and 1994. However, the 1994 World Cup is particularly memorable for Baggio. Italy reached the final in the USA, facing Brazil. After a goalless draw and extra time, the match was decided by penalties. With Brazil leading 3-2, Baggio’s miss from the spot handed Brazil their fourth World Cup title.
Post-retirement, Baggio took on the role of president of the technical sector of the Italian Football Federation in 2010. He resigned in 2013, citing the federation’s disregard for his proposals to nurture young talent.
Beyond football, Baggio is celebrated for his humanitarian efforts. He became a UN ambassador in 2002, raising funds for disaster-stricken areas and those affected by illness.
