A man caught in rough waters has been rescued after using his smartwatch to call for help.

He was out swimming when he was caught in a rip tide and was pulled out to sea.

As the man began to panic, he suddenly remembered that he could use his Apple watch, which he was wearing at the time, to call for help.

He called 000 and emergency services swiftly dispatched a rescue team.

The man, who had been swimming off the coast of Byron Bay, Australia, was found approximately 0.6 miles off Broken Head coast at 10am on Saturday (13 July).

He was winched and flown to safety by Surf Life Saving NSW and the Gold Coast-based Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter.

The swimmer was treated by paramedics but did not sustain any serious injuries, as reported by Need To Know.

The harrowing ordeal was shared on Instagram, where it has racked up over 5,000 views.

Surf Life Saving Queensland said the smartwatch came in “very handy for this lucky swimmer”.

“Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service Queensland was pleased to assist our colleagues in New South Wales today with a rescue over the border,” said chief pilot Paul Gibson.

“Lifesaving is a joint effort between many parties, we were happy to work together with NSW to represent the red and yellow in the air.

“We would like to remind everyone to please check conditions before entering the water, even in winter conditions can change quickly.”

With over 5,000 views, people shared their appreciation in the comments.

Paul added: “Another lifesaving job well done by team.”
