An X-ray then confirmed what was causing the problem, as reported by Need To Know.

They were stuck in the lower cervical area.
Forceps were then used to pull them out of his airway.
After surgery, another x-ray was carried out and it showed no signs of perforation in his oesophagus.

To aid his recovery, the man, of Graz, southwest of Vienna, Austria, was fed by other methods than by mouth for six days.
He was then able to eat normally once more.
Antibiotics were also prescribed allowing him to recover smoothly.
The unusual procedure was revealed in a study by the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Medical University of Graz.
