An airport spokesperson said the fire occurred at Gate D46 in Terminal 1.
The subsequent delay affected passengers travelling to Denpasar International Airport in Bali.
The flight was due to depart at 7.10am.
A video shows passengers staring at the blazing baggage scanner in the gate’s waiting room.
Black smoke bellows from the machine before it apparently explodes and fills the room with white mist.
Passengers are seen fleeing from the gate while covering their airways so as not to breathe in the fumes.
The video was shared on TikTok where it has garnered 388,000 views and hundreds of comments.
The cameraperson said: “After being awake for 24 hours and having a 10-hour layover, this was the last thing we expected to happen right before getting on the plane.”
The airport spokesperson confirmed that the fire had been caused by an electrical fault.
They said the blaze was quickly extinguished by two airport workers while the passengers were being evacuated to another gate, as reported by Need To Know.
The spokesperson added: “No passengers were injured.”
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) received a report about the fire at 6.40am, however the workers had already put it out before firefighters had arrived.
The flight to Bali was delayed for nearly two hours, departing just before 9am.
