CCTV footage shows how a car pulled up, two men emerged from the back seat, and one yelled: “You lost.”
One of the men raised a handgun and shot the policeman while the other ran back into the car as it travelled down the avenue.
As the kids and their step-mother ran into the school, the gunman shot Monteiro again as he fell to the pavement.
As he lay on the ground, the suspect rummaged around his beltline, took his service weapon, and ran off with it.
Monteiro, 42, was taken to a general hospital in a patrol car.
He was later transferred to a police hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he underwent surgery after the shooting last Tuesday (24 Sept).
The police are investigating the case and one of their lines of investigation is that Monteiro was mistaken for someone else.
Monteiro is a sub-lieutenant assigned to the Expressways Policing Battalion of the Military Police.
He later married the woman seen in the footage with his six-year-old kids, as reported by Need To Know.
Monteiro’s son has been receiving counselling ever since his mother’s death.
He is reportedly shaken after witnessing his father being shot just inches away from him.
As well as raising his two children, Monteiro helps care for a physically disabled brother.
Detectives are working to identify the man who shot him.
