Witnesses tried to stop the man from leaving the scene, but he escaped.
He then left the area of Corona Market in Guadalajara, Mexico, and drove to the historic centre.
Outside the Guadalajara Cathedral, he reportedly rammed around a dozen people taking part in a pro-life march at around 7pm on 26 October.
He entered Plaza Guadalajara at full speed, dodged the flowerbeds and headed towards the esplanade in front of the cathedral where devotees were praying as part of the ‘Fourth National Celebration in Favour of Life’.
Around 3,000 people were gathered on the plaza at the time.
Police on the scene found several residents protecting him from a baying mob trying to lynch him, according to reports.
The cops placed the suspect under arrest and removed him from the area.
They later said he was driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for medical attention.
In total, 16 people were injured including a 14-year-old girl who was trapped under the vehicle’s tyres.
Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.
In addition, it was confirmed at the time of the carjacking that a minor was still inside the vehicle.
The four-year-old boy was rescued unharmed and handed over to his parents, as reported by Need To Know.
City mayor Verónica Delgadillo García said on social media: “Regarding what happened a short while ago in the historic centre of Guadalajara, I am coordinating with the different authorities to address the situation.
“Medical attention is already being given to the injured people.
“I will keep you informed on matters on the account of the Guadalajara City Council.”
She said only two people of the 16 hospitalised needed to remain under observation overnight.
The mayor added: “Fortunately, they are all stable.”
The suspect has been identified as Juan Carlos ‘N’, 33.
The investigation is ongoing.
