Two beach-goers were trapped on an “unsteady” cliff with “large waves” breaking around them after the tide cut them off.
Rescuers abseiled to them in a daring operation.
A team used ropes to get them to safety amid huge surf which threatened to sweep them away.
The rescue happened at Greenaway Beach, Polzeath, Cornwall on Saturday, (26 Jul).
Polzeath Coastguard Rescue Team and Rock lifeboat attended, as reported by Need To Know
A coastguard spokesperson said: “Initially the lifeboat looked to pick up the two people but due to the sea conditions a rope rescue was deemed to be the safest option.
“Boscastle Coastguard Team and HM Coastguard Padstow were also paged to assist with the rescue.
“With Rock lifeboat standing by as safety cover, a cliff technician was lowered to the two people.
“Battling large breaking waves and an unsteady cliff face they were recovered one by one to safety.
“This particular evening was a spring tide, which is higher than usual.
“When the sun and moon are in alignment at the time of a new or full moon the solar and lunar forces join together and larger tidal movements occur.
“High tides become higher (spring tides) and low tides become lower (neap tides).
“These spring and neap tides happen twice each within a lunar month.
“The weather and size of the swell will also impact tidal movements.
“Tidal heights are usually shown next to tide times for specific geographical locations.
“You can compare heights to previous days to see how today’s tide will be different.
“Being cut off by the tide can happen quickly, especially on beaches with sandbars or small coves.
“If you have any doubts then change your plans and enjoy the coast another way.
“As always, if you see anyone in trouble on or near the coast, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.”
