A 24-year-old chess champion allegedly stabbed his mother to death as she slept before calmly calling the police to report the killing.
Davi Sulzbacher Gonçalves is alleged to have grabbed a knife from the kitchen in the early hours of Saturday (2 Aug) at his family home.
He allegedly crept into his mother’s bedroom and began stabbing her as she lay in bed.

When the knife broke mid-attack, Davi reportedly returned to the kitchen and fetched a second blade.
He returned to the bedroom and continued the assault until 61-year-old Lisete Sulzbacher stopped showing signs of life.

Moments later, he phoned the police and waited at the scene in Florianópolis, Brazil, to be arrested.
Davi is said to have told officers he had a strained relationship with his mother and claimed she had “controlled” him since childhood.
He also accused her of drugging him before taking him to a psychologist, leading, he said, to a false autism diagnosis.
Davi allegedly admitted to premeditating the murder, as reported by Need To Know.
A court has ordered a psychiatric evaluation, which could be key to the defence’s strategy.

Davi enrolled in mechanical engineering at the Federal University of Santa Catarina on a scholarship in 2018.
Registered with the International Chess Federation, he has a decorated chess background.
He competed in the World Youth Championship in Greece at age 15 and won the Santa Catarina under-18 title in 2017.
He has played over 19,000 online matches.
He had no prior criminal record but is now being held on femicide charges.
