Brits abroad have been warned after an outbreak of salmonella in burgers has been reported in popular holiday hotspots.

The range of chicken burgers sold at a popular supermarket chain has been issued with a health alert.

The products were distributed to stores in Alicante, a hot spot for Brits trying to soak up the sun.

Families looking to enjoy a balcony BBQ have been warned to be wary of the contaminated scran.

Tray packets of the DIA selection chicken burgers are believed to contain a presence of salmonella, as reported by Need To Know.

AESAN, the Spanish agency for food safety and nutrition, have warned locals and Brits to avoid consumption.

The contaminated item has six 90g burger patties per tray.

The product was also distributed to DIA stores located in Andalucía, Asturias, Aragón, Valencia, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Cataluña, Galicia and Madrid.

Distribution to other areas cannot be ruled out.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, 16 Apr.

The relevant authorities across several Spanish regions have been contacted to recall the affected items.

AESAN stated: “The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition has learned, through the Coordinated System for Rapid Information Exchange (SCIRI), of an alert notification sent by the health authorities of Andalusia regarding the presence of Salmonella spp in the chicken burger meat product of the SELECCIÓN DE DÍA brand.

“People who have products affected by this alert in their homes are advised to refrain from consuming them.

“If you have consumed any of the products from the affected batches and experience any symptoms consistent with salmonellosis (mainly diarrhoea and/or vomiting accompanied by fever and headache), it is recommended that you go to a health centre.”
