Dutch footballer Quincy Promes – who was once linked with Liverpool Arsenal and Man Utd – has been arrested for drug offences.

He is being extradited to his home country for a cocaine smuggling conviction.

The Dutch footballer was reportedly detained at his home in Dubai following a request by the authorities in his home country.

The 33-year-old was sentenced to six years in prison in absentia in February last year.

He failed to appear in court alongside his co-defendant.

They were convicted of smuggling 1,362 kilograms of cocaine into the Netherlands via the Port of Antwerp in January 2020.

Promes, who played for Ajax and Sevilla, had previously been convicted of stabbing a relative at a family event the same year.

While the case was being investigated, he moved from Ajax to Spartak Moscow in a deal worth around £7.2 million.

He was convicted without appearing in court, and was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison for the knife attack.

The footballer has appealed both cases, as reported by Need To Know.

Earlier this week, Promes said he was willing to travel to the Netherlands to attend the appeal hearings, but only if he could retain his freedom.

His lawyer explained: “He wants to explain himself, but he also wants to continue his professional footballing career.”

They submitted a request to the court of appeal in Amsterdam, but it was rejected.

The Dutch public prosecution service declined to comment on his arrest in the United Arab Emirates yesterday (12 Jun).

Promes was detained at his home and taken to a detention centre in Dubai, according to reports.

Prosecutors did confirm that their extradition request was “at an advanced stage” and that “progress is being made”.

Promes’ lawyer Cem Polat confirmed the arrest, but declined to comment any further on the matter.

The Dutch forward has been capped 50 times by his country, scoring seven goals.

He is currently a free agent after spending last season at Dubai United.

The extradition process is ongoing.

Promes was linked with Premier League champions Liverpool in 2017, Arsenal in 2020 and United in 2015.
