A dog expert has revealed which dog breeds are the most costly to look after per year with surprising results.
Adem Fehmi, a canine behaviourist for Rover, has worked with canines of different breeds and pedigrees for over 25 years.

And he’s now speaking exclusively to Jam Press to lift the lid on which pooches could run up the highest tab for its owner.
Surprisingly, the miniature schnauzer tops the list, costing around £512 for just the bare essentials per year.
Second place is nabbed by pugs, followed by the Labradoodle in the third spot.

“The cost of dogs varies for a number of reasons,” the 40-year-old, from Hertfordshire, England, told http://NeedToKnow.co.uk .

“There are of course essential needs that have to be met, however, owners of the likes of the mini schnauzer will also have to consider more expensive grooming costs in order to keep their iconic coat and rather posh moustache in top condition.
“In my experience as a behaviourist and trainer, pugs are likely to have come in second due to being a brachycephalic breed of dog, which may require more veterinary treatment over the course of a year due to an increased risk in breathing issues and conditions.”
But if you want to pamper your pet, you’ll likely have to shell out four times that amount.
According to Battersea Dogs Home, may owners often fork out £2,000 a year to keep their dog living in luxury.
Adem’s expert comments are in line with new research by Rover, the world’s largest online marketplace for pet care.
The company’s survey has listed breeds in order of costs including food, healthcare, toys and treats – and that’s not including the price you pay for the dog itself.
Some breeds are more prone to certain medical issues, such as the laboured breath of the pug or coat management for a labradoodle – which could see costs rise.

Adem said: “The breeds coming in further down the list are more likely to have fewer medical expenses in comparison to those with a known risk of particular medical conditions, and breeds like the Yorkshire terrier and chihuahua may have lower food costs overall simply due to their smaller size,
“Some breeds are more prone to developing certain medical issues.
“This can increase the cost of obtaining pet insurance for these breeds and, if a dog is not insured or a particular condition is not covered by the dog’s insurance, owners can find themselves forking out hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds on keeping their pets healthy with the right medical intervention, whether this be through surgeries, regular medication, or even specialised food.”
Looking after a cuddly canine is a full-time job, costing both money and time to add the four-legged friend to your family.
With dogs living for an average of 13 years, new owners are looking at spending upwards of £26,000 for the privilege of having a pet.
Adem added: “For those looking to add a fur baby to their brood, I’d advise careful mapping of the costs of the breed and their needs, versus what you can realistically afford before making the commitment of dog ownership.
“Remember, it’s a big lifestyle change that requires emotional, physical and financial planning and care.”
