A man, Thomas Mørch, perplexes the internet with his discovery of a moose exhibiting a rare genetic mutation in his “backyard” in Hallingdal, Norway. Thomas, amused by the animal’s appearance, likens it to a cow, not the expected deer. Informed by a friend, he captures striking images of the moose’s unique grey and white fur and vivid blue eyes.

Sharing the photos on Instagram, Thomas notes, “The patches on the moose are due to ‘piebaldism’,” Thomas told NeetToKnow.co.uk.
Thomas elaborates on the genetic mutation, stating, “This is a genetic mutation affecting pigmentation, which can also affect domesticated animals, such as horses, dogs, and cattle.” Highlighting that it involves melanin-forming cells in the skin and hair, he notes its occurrence in humans.

Informed by a friend, Thomas, skilled in documenting wildlife, shares his initial reaction, “My first thought was to laugh. I asked my friend, ‘What is this? It reminds me of a cow.’ We laughed together, and I just shot these pictures smiling like it was a dream.”
The photographer’s social media post stirred reactions, with some suggesting the moose appeared AI-generated. Comments ranged from astonishment to admiration for nature’s beauty.
One user expressed disbelief, stating, “Looks very AI generated to me,”

while another questioned, “What the hell.”
A third marveled at nature, noting, “Nature is so amazing new generations think it’s so perfect that only can be AI…”

Amidst varied opinions, a user appreciated the animal’s aesthetics, saying, “Looks unreal in the snow. [I] hope it will be allowed to live in peace.”
Scientifically, animal piebaldism is defined by white patches and blue eyes, as per Science Direct.
