Rugby legend JPR Williams MBE tragically only had just over £5,00 left to his name when he died.

He died on January 8, aged 74 after bravely battling bacterial meningitis.

The mutton-chopped, former full-back – full name John Peter Rhys Williams – was part of Wales’ golden era in the 1970s.

As well as his facial hair he was famed for playing with his socks around his ankles.

But tragically only had £5,150 to leave to his family, his Grant of Probate has revealed.

Mercurial Williams had his beloved wife Priscilla – aka Scilla – as the executor of his will which he wrote in 1981.

The value of his estate was left to Scilla.

The couple, who lived in Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, had three daughters, Lauren, Annie and Fran and a son Peter.

After hanging up his boots he carried on working as a surgeon.

The will reads: “I appoint my wife Priscilla Williams to be the sole executrix of this my Will.

“If my said wife survives me I give all my property of whatsoever kind and wheresoever situate to my wife absolutely.

“I give all my real and personal property whatsoever and wheresoever, including property over which I may have a general power of appointment or disposition by Will, to my Trustees upon trust to sell call in and convert the same into money with power to postpone such sale calling in and conversion for so long as they shall in their absolute discretion think fit without being liable for loss.

“My Trustees shall out of the monies to arise from the sale calling in and conversion of or forming part of my Estate pay my debts funeral and testamentary expenses and legacies and all capital transfer tax payable in respect of my Estate and shall invest the residue of such monies in any investments of a nature hereby authorised with power from time to time to vary investments for others of an authorised nature and shall stand possessed of such investments and of all parts of my Estate for the time being remaining unsold and any ready money (hereinafter called “my residuary Estate”) upon the trusts hereinafter declared concerning the same.”

“My Trustees shall hold my residuary estate as to both capital and income upon trust for any child or children of mine living at the date of my death who shall attain the age of 21 years and if more than one in equal shares.

“Monies comprised in my residuary estate may be invested or applied in the purchase of or loan at interest upon the security of such stocks funds shares securities or other investments or property of whatsoever nature and wheresoever situate and whether producing income or not and whether involving liability or not or upon such personal credit with or without security as my Trustees may in their absolute discretion think fit to the intent that my Trustees shall have the same full and unrestricted powers of investing and varying investments in all respects as if they were absolutely and beneficially entitled thereto”

He played 55 times for Wales, scoring 36 points and won three Grand Slams for his country.

He played eight times for the British Lions and was part of the winning tours to New Zealand in 1971 and South Africa in 1974.

He is widely regarded as the greatest full-back of all time.

Williams became known as JPR after another John Williams, JJ, played for Wales as well.

He died at the University Hospital of Wales, as reported by Need To Know.
