The shark was spotted by Zigor Arguiñano, the son of Spanish celebrity chef Karlos Arguiñano.
He filmed the animal near his father’s restaurant in Zarautz, Basque Country, Spain, on Sunday (26 May).
A spokesperson for the nearby San Sebastián Aquarium said it could have been a basking shark, the second-largest living shark species, based on the shape of its fin and tail.
They usually measure between 26 and 33 feet (eight and 10 metres) in length and can weigh up to five tons.
Despite their size, basking sharks do not typically pose a risk to humans.
They use their huge mouths to swallow up to 2,000 litres of water per hour before filtering it through their gills and consuming the plankton that makes up their diet.
Basking sharks are considered an endangered species by the International Union of Conservation of nature (IUCN), as reported by Need To Know.
