A spectacular landslide was caught on camera as it struck a village, completely destroying a winding hillside road.
Footage shows a huge section of the hill detached and moving downslope yesterday (17 Jul) morning.
Luckily, at the time of the debris flow, no cars were driving on the hillside road, which ended up broken into pieces.
According to local media, four people were working in the fields at the time, but they were evacuated to safety.
Remarkably, no casualties were reported after 800,000 cubic metres of debris flowed towards the reservoir downslope.
The landslide happened in Jiajiadian Village, Guizhou Town, Zigui County, Hubei Province, China.
In addition to the road, several citrus orchards were reportedly destroyed.
Officials arrived on the scene shortly after the disaster to manage relief efforts, as seen on Need To Know.
They reportedly cordoned off the affected area and are verifying the extent of the damage.
Some reports say the landslip may have been caused, in part, by bungling officials.
There had been heavy showers in the area and, to manage downstream flooding, rainwater was being stored in the reservoir.
However, the dam gates were opened in recent days to free up more space ahead of the next downpour.
It’s believed the landslip may have been caused by soil saturation and the partial draining of the reservoir.
