A woman has been jailed for 54 years for ordering the murders of her sister, brother-in-law, and niece.

It is thought she did it in a bid to inherit nearly £1million.

Simone Gonçalves Resende was handed the lengthy sentence on Friday (30 Aug) after being found guilty of masterminding the murders.

Her son Matheus Resende Khalil was given 49 years in prison for being one of the perpetrators.

The others, Diego Moreira da Cunha and Gabriel Botrel de Araújo Miranda, each received 50 years.

The three family members were shot in their home in the early hours of 17 February 2017.

The victims were lawyer Wagner da Silva, 43, his wife Soraya Gonçalves Resende, 37, and their daughter Giovanna Resende Salgado, 10.

When the emergency services arrived at the scene in São Gonçalo near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, they found the mother and daughter dead.

Wagner was alive but had been shot three times in the head.

He later died in hospital.

Detectives think the motive – which wasn’t proven – for the crime was a dispute over an inheritance valued at 7m BRL (£949,200).

They believed Simone ordered the murders of her adoptive sister and her family so she could enjoy the entirety of her late father’s estate.

Juliana Bessa Ferraz Kryhktine, who presided over the trial in Rio de Janeiro, said: “The circumstances of the crime are severe.

“Firstly, the crime was committed in the early morning while the victims were asleep.

“Furthermore, the crime took place inside the victims’ home, which must serve as a safe haven for its occupants.”

The judge added: “The crime is doubly aggravated because it was committed for a base motive.

“And it involved methods that made it harder for the victims to defend themselves.”

Diego is still protesting his innocence, as reported by Need To Know.

His lawyer, Wallace Martins, claims he only confessed because he was tortured at the police station.

All four convicts may appeal their sentences.
