Three unnamed people, including two students, were killed.
A further 12 were injured and rushed to a hospital.
Yu lost consciousness immediately after impact and was also taken to hospital where he remains in a coma, as reported by Need To Know.
Shocking footage showed the moment Yu collided with the crowd.
He first crashed into a man on a motorbike.
Bodies could be seen lying lifelessly on the ground as people tried to resuscitate them.
According to local press, the vehicle travelled 140 metres down the street before it was stopped by a central divider.
Traffic authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether the crash resulted from a medical episode, mechanical failure, or driver error.
Police have reportedly ruled out drink driving.
They also discovered that Yu had renewed his license in line with the law in February this year.
Regulations in his area mean that a person who has reached the age of 75 must be issued a driver’s license every three years.
Speaking to police, Yu’s wife revealed that he had called her to inform her that he was on his way home right before the incident.
She added that nothing in their conversation led her to suspect something was about to happen.
The crash took place outside of the Bei Da Elementary School, in the Sanxia District, New Taipei City, Taiwan.
Local press have reported that Yu served as a director of a finance company before he retired.

He has since lived with his wife in the area of Three Gorges Community, located in the Sanxia District for more than 10 years.
After retirement, the father often served as a local environmental protection volunteer.
