A group of spectators cheered as he then leapt into the centre of the rapids.
It happened in the Yamuna River, Uttar Pradesh, India.
Its level was running high and fast after monsoon rains, as reported by Need To Know.
The 19-year-old man from Niwada village reportedly did the dare for a 500 rupee, or £4 bet.
The video clip showed him desperately trying to swim to shore after surfacing from the plunge.
But he made no headway in the powerful currents as he was swept downstream.
The clip ends as the exhausted swimmer appeared to be getting sucked under.
Despite rescue and recovery efforts involving police, divers and the State Disaster Response Force the man named locally as Mohd Junaid remained missing.
Officials said the river’s rising levels worsened by continuous rain hindered search operations.
Investigations were also being made into the people who allegedly encouraged the stunt and videoed it.
Locals have called for increased safety measures and surveillance along the river’s banks.
