Shocking footage shows pyrotechnics hurtling into the assembled crowd, exploding on impact and showering people and the ground around them with sparks.
Onlookers were seen cowering and scrambling in panic, unsure which way to run as deafening bangs rang out and blinding flashes erupted all around them.
The warzone-like scenes unfolded during a major temple procession in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, on Saturday (14 Feb).

Families with young children were among those watching. Some later described the chaos as feeling like an “air raid”.
No injuries had been formally reported at the time of writing, though several people said online that they suffered minor burns.
Patches of grass along the pond bank were also left scorched by the blasts.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, as reported by Need To Know.
Fire officials believe the wayward fireworks may have been discharged from a crane-mounted spinning wheel.
Kaohsiung City Government said Zuoying Taizi Temple had applied for permission in advance and that the fire department had approved the safety plan.
If breaches of the Fireworks and Firecrackers Management Act are confirmed, the contractor responsible could face a fine of up to 150,000 TWD (£3,518), according to local reports.
One viewer wrote: “For the sake of just five minutes of brilliance, they create huge amounts of air pollution, can spark fires, and can literally scare pets or birds to death. I absolutely hate fireworks.
“And when they misfire – exploding in the tube or firing at close range and detonating – they can blow people up like in this video.”
