A treacherous mountain road has been dubbed one of most dangerous on the planet.

It has over 30 curves per mile and a single unpaved lane stretching through the mist-covered peaks.

The treacherous trek reaches altitudes of up to 9,186 feet above sea level.

It is just 9.8 feet wide.

The 50-mile stretch of road links the Andes and the Amazon in South America.

It is often refereed to as the ‘Springboard of Death’.

It connects Pasto in Nariño Department with Puerto Asís in Putumayo Department in the mountainous south-western corner of Colombia.

And it has been the scene of countless fatal accidents over the years.

Due to the road’s climatic and geographic conditions, it is often affected by dense fog, hard rain and regular landslides.

Agricultural workers and villagers depend on the Springboard of Death to transport their goods.

Its origin dates back to 1909 when missionaries established a bridleway to the villages of the indigenous communities in Putumayo.

Over time, the path became more widely used and was extended.

A road was built in the region in the early 1930s during the Colombia-Peru War.

In 1944, the Springboard of Death section was inaugurated, becoming the main access route to Putumayo.

Today, locals complain that the road has been neglected by the authorities, as reported by Need To Know.

Landslides often block access, forcing residents to hire private machinery to clear the road.

According to Colombian influencer Edwin ‘El Pateperro’ Dávila, the road is a kind of “graduation” for learners to hone their driving skills.

He also believes it should be renamed the ‘Springboard of Biodiversity’ due to the rich abundance of flora and fauna found along the route.

He said: “We’re not going to talk about the Springboard of Death, but rather the Springboard of Biodiversity, as many inhabitants of this area have named it due to the wildlife there.”

Despite its reputation, the views are often breathtaking, featuring waterfalls, lush ravines, and an imposing mountain range that merges with the Amazon rainforest.

Argentine content creator Pablo Imhoff said: “The scenery along the entire route is incredible.

“I mean, you come across these rivers, these waterfalls.

“It’s beautiful the entire route.”
