The pod then “detached and fell to the pavement”, according to the authorities.
The cable car plunged to the ground, landing on top of a taxi.
Around 20 people were injured and one person was killed in Medellín, Colombia, at around 4.30am on 26 June.
The 55-year-old deceased has been named as Jhon Jairo Londoño and was said to be a passenger in the pod at the time of the fall.
He was admitted to the Clinica CES hospital with “multiple injuries” before passing away, the hospital said in a statement.
Medellín mayor Federico Gutiérrez said there were around 10 people in the pod when it fell.
Around 20 people needed medical attention for various injuries.
Meanwhile, another 200 passengers were trapped inside the transport system’s 40 gondolas as the emergency services attended the scene, according to city disaster manager Carlos Andrés Quintero.
The incident took place on the K line of Medellin’s Metrocable gondola lift system.
Metrocable runs a total of six lines across low-income neighbourhoods built on steep hills in the city.
Inaugurated in 2004, it is considered the first urban cable propelled transit system in South America.
Metrocable manager Tomás Elejalde called it the worst accident in the system’s history.
He added that the cable cars had last undergone a maintenance service about six weeks ago, as reported by Need To Know.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
