He had felt fine earlier in the day, and staff initially thought he might have the flu.
But in the afternoon, his condition worsened so rapidly that an ambulance had to be called.
He was taken in critical condition to a hospital in Anzio, Italy, and then urgently transferred to Bambino Gesù Hospital in nearby Rome, where he died in the early hours of Thursday (8 Jan).
Early reports suggest he died from a brain bleed or aneurysm.
Cristian played as a midfielder for the Grifone Soccer under 12 team, as reported by Need To Know.

Before that, he played for ASD Futsal Anzio, who said: “He was a kind, truly unique boy, with a big heart, rare inner strength, and always respectful to his teammates and everyone he met.
“Shy, yet determined to learn, improve, and give his all at every training session.”
Cristian’s teammates carried his coffin at his funeral in Anzio on Saturday (10 Jan).
One of his classmates read at the service: “You were always ready to help everyone with a smile. You loved football with all your heart – just mentioning the ball would make your eyes light up.
“On the pitch, you ran with pure joy, simply for the love of playing, being together, and feeling free. Your spirit will live on in all our hearts.”
His first coach, Roberto, recalled: “He came to me a shy, somewhat awkward boy, but with a rare determination in his eyes. He wanted to achieve his dream of becoming a footballer.

“Seeing that determination, I gave him the time, patience, and guidance he needed to truly learn how to play. In my heart, I know I helped him live his dream.”
Another of his coaches, Luciano Bottoni, said: “He was a polite, always positive boy with a great team spirit. He fit in immediately and gave his all on the pitch.
“I remember his joy after an important victory and the pride he felt when he was named the best defender in a tournament.”
Cristian is survived by his father Emidio, mother Francesca, and 14-year-old brother.
