The bodies of a South African woman and her American “boyfriend” were discovered after a child spotted blood seeping into the flat below.
Investigators believe Ian Alexander Bruder Hay, 30, shot Leigh-Anne McKenzie dead on 19 July before taking his own life.
Their bodies were found in a luxury triplex apartment in Curitiba, Brazil, which had been rented for two months.

The grim discovery was made after a child living downstairs noticed blood leaking through the ceiling and running down the wall.

Police seized an unregistered 9mm pistol, a large quantity of ammunition, drugs, syringes, six mobile phones, watches, jewellery, and extended magazines from the scene.
McKenzie, 27, is believed to have arrived in Brazil just a day before the killing, on 18 July.
Police are still investigating the motive for the crime and the reason for her visit, as reported by Need To Know.

Hay had previously assaulted McKenzie on 31 October 2024 while they were living together in Houston, Texas.
In a fundraising post, McKenzie said she had been “assaulted, held captive, and threatened with death”.
She managed to escape their apartment on 2 November and was hospitalised for 24 hours, suffering “three spinal fractures, as well as a laceration to my right temple”.

Hay was arrested two days later, on 4 November, but was released on bail without an ankle monitor or other restrictions.
Shortly afterwards, he travelled to Brazil, where he also held citizenship.
He had prior convictions for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and driving while intoxicated.
The investigation is ongoing.
