During the subsequent chase, the lorry crashed into a cabin at the Tepotzotlán toll booth on the Mexico-Querétaro Highway near Mexico City.
The lorry was destined for the Central de Abasto (CEDA) in the Mexican capital, the world’s largest wholesale food market.
It was reportedly transporting 51 tons of watermelons in the trailer.
The fruit cargo littered the road after the crash last Thursday (8 Jan).
According to local media, the driver was found tied-up but unharmed in the back of the cab.
The armed gang managed to escape on foot and remain at large, as reported by Need To Know.
The toll booth and lorry were both severely damaged in the crash, but no one was reported as injured.
The authorities closed motorway lanes to clean up the area, causing traffic delays for several hours.
The attack was the latest in a wave of assaults on lorries on the Mexico-Queretaro highway, considered one of the busiest and most dangerous in the country.
The investigation continues.
