A woman who decided to “postpone” motherhood to focus on herself says people judge her for getting a dog instead of a baby.

Wanessa Moura is a proud “dog mum” to Luke but is constantly batting away questions about when she will have a human child.

The 30-year-old influencer, who has one million followers online, often receives unwanted comments about her choice to adopt a pooch over birthing a baby.

She’s been called a “failure”, “selfish” and told her pet is “just a phase”.

Wanessa is hitting back at anyone who believes owning a dog isn’t as fulfilling as becoming a human mother.

“I decided to postpone motherhood due to my current focus, time, and other priorities, while also preserving my fertility to possibly revisit this choice in the future,” the content creator told Need To Know.

“So, I made the decision to adopt Luke, who means the world to me; at this moment, it was the best choice.

“Some people have called me selfish, while others hinted that I’m missing out on life’s best experience, as if my choice is a ‘failure’ or just a ‘phase.’

“I’ve even heard that a dog could never replace a child, which I find disrespectful to both Luke and my relationship with him.”

Wanessa, who ended a two-year engagement not long ago, follows her own beat and refuses to bow into societal pressure.

Wanessa, who also owns her own vegan cosmetics brand, said: “Although others’ judgment doesn’t affect me personally, I see it as part of a larger problem: the social pressure on women to follow a specific life path.

“The term ‘dog motherhood’ is trivialized by many, but for me, it holds great significance.

“It involves dedication, time and a strong sense of responsibility.

“Luke isn’t just a dog to me; he’s a part of my life that teaches me daily about patience and care.

“Choosing to be Luke’s mom, in my case, is choosing a life without human children, but full of love and learning.

“I believe this bond is a valid choice that deserves respect like any other form of affection and care.

“Happiness and fulfillment come in many forms, and no one should be judged for making choices aligned with their values.

“I’ve chosen what makes me happy, and I know Luke is happy with me, too.

“In the end, that’s what matters.

“All forms of love are valid and deserve respect.

“I’m not ready for [human] motherhood right now – who knows what the future holds?”
